I’ll Form… The Head!
You’ll notice an ad for a new webcomic called Heroes Without Borders running on the site. They’re sponsoring the leaderboard position for the next few weeks, and I want to give you a proper introduction.
Written by Lucien Soulban, Heroes Without Borders is a weekly comic about a super-heroine named Chain-Spider, a woman with the ability to grow and manipulate the chains growing out of her body. When a battle leaves her paralyzed, she vanishes from the superhero scene to uncover the truth behind the night of the battle, a night with huge consequences for the world and every metahuman in it.
Lucien has written Hero High, Supernaturals, and Lockdown for Green Ronin’s superhero RPG, Mutants & Masterminds. Heck, this guy loves superhero comics so much, he’s even written fan fiction published in the City of Heroes comic books and on their website.
Heroes without Borders is a pretty large world, and they’re slowly revealing it — not only through the comic, but though a series of articles. Chain-Spider is a heroine in a world much like ours. Her powers are less godlike than the heroes of the Big Two. The superheroes aren’t deities or the representatives of such lofty ideals that it escapes our ability to grasp them. The heroes and heroines are human and many serve in what’s commonly called “Tour,” a roughly two-year cycle on the street, fighting crime and hoping to get enough recognition to land acting parts, music albums, sponsorships, product rights, modeling gigs… anything for a shot at fame. The Tour is two years because most heroes either burn out, get badly injured, or simply retire after failing to hit mainstream saturation.
HWB is a world in which heroes are the new “reality television” and what it means to be a hero in a world filled with glory seekers. Chain-Spider is one of the few tried-and-true supers around. She’s someone who thought she would fight the good fight until that One Event opens her eyes to a truth that shatters the foundations of her beliefs and reveals a secret about her world.
It’s just starting up, so you’re coming in at the perfect time to immerse yourself into this world. I’ve checked it out, and I think you’re going to love it.
